Title: A Sky Beyond the Storm
Author: Sabaa Tahir
Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy
In short: An epic conclusion to a thrilling series
The finale of Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes series is finally here. It has been a long time since I first read and fell in love with Tahir’s characters in An Ember in the Ashes. So long, in fact that I found myself rereading the entire series just so I could get to the finale.
If I’m being honest, I was worried about the finale after finishing A Reaper at the Gates. My favorite characters were headed in a direction I didn’t like. I wanted to scream at them all. But now that I’ve read the finale the steps leading to it make so much more sense. A Sky Beyond the Storm was every bit the sort of finale I wanted for this series. It broke my heart, multiple times over with everything that happens. There are bone chilling battle scenes and some major revelations. All the threads that Tahir sowed in the previous books were tied together in a neat little knot which made the series feel complete.
One of the best things about this series is the character development. It’s hard to even fathom all the things Tahir puts her characters through. Yet despite all their trials they show remarkable resistance. The way Helene, Laia and Elias change through these novels is incredible. I also adored the way their relationships developed as well as their relationships with other characters. I think these books are a real tribute to the power of the human spirit. It truly is Tahir’s characters that make this series shine more than anything.
Despite this series containing so much bloodshed, the ending was an overwhelmingly positive one. I loved every second of it.
I’m rating A Sky Beyond the Storm 4/5 stars.
