Title: The Wicked King

Author: Holly Black

Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy

In short: A predictable sequel to The Cruel Prince

No spoilers

I devoured this book. After the ending of The Cruel Prince I was desperate to know what would happen next. However, the outcome wasn’t at all surprising. Backstabbing. Betrayal. Revenge. This book series is Game-Of-Thronesish in the way that the characters will do anything to get the throne of Elfhame. Knowing all of these characters it was quite easy to predict what they would do in this book.

The Wicked King ends on a cliffhanger. Sure. But it wasn’t a cliffhanger that surprised or shocked me. It seemed obvious from the start that something of the sort would happen. Things were never going to end well for the main character, Jude in this book. She had gotten away with far too much in The Cruel Prince. After reading all the great reviews for this book, I think I had expected more than what I got.

That said, there were parts of this book that I did really enjoy reading. The way Jude and Cardan dance around each other for the duration of the book was thrilling. I loved the tension between these two characters in the first book and it gets even more tense in the sequel.

Black also explores more of the Undersea in this book. I enjoyed moving to this new setting and I enjoyed how she described it and how it worked as a setting. Also: let’s be honest, who doesn’t love the concept of mermaids? It’s something that I think is glossed over in a lot of other fantasy stories, but in The Wicked King these magical watery beings actually have a significant impact on the story.

I’m rating The Wicked King 3/5 stars.
