Review: The Final Empire

Title: The Final Empire

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Genre: Fantasy

No spoilers.

The Final Empire is the first book in Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series – Mistborn. And, like any good fantasy story it contains a powerful an terrible dark lord, an unlikely hero raised in the slums and one insane teacher. Of course, there is also a whole lot of magic and a whole lot of mystery.

The magic in this book comes in the form of allomancy; powers gained by ingesting alloy’s and ‘burning’ them. It is an interesting concept which provides some pretty intense fighting scenes throughout the novel. Such scenes give the novel the fuel it needs to make it at times an exhilarating read. Although Sanderson’s writing is far from perfect he does seem to have a knack for creating suspense. For me, this made the novel a highly enjoyable read.

Through his storytelling Sanderson has created a unique and vivid world – like no other fantasy world I have encountered before. His characters are each vivid and some of them are magnificently flawed, each having distinct strengths and weaknesses and each developing throughout the novel.

If you are looking for a good fantasy read – I cannot recommend this book enough. Whilst it is a mammoth read, I can assure you every single page is worth it.

I’m rating this book 4.5/5.
