Review: The Night Circus

Title: The Night Circus

Author: Erin Morgenstern

Genre (s): Fantasy, fiction, romance.

Little or no spoilers.

When I first picked up this book I had no idea what to expect. I had read no reviews and knew little about the novel apart from its title and the fact that many other book bloggers before me had enjoyed it immensely.

From the first couple of pages I found myself completely enchanted with this book. I was completely mystified by this book from the start. There are so many things that occur which  prompt a multitude of questions – many of which are not answered until the very end of the book. This makes the book hard to put down at times.

Then there is the way the book is laid out. Interspersed throughout each part are short excerpts which describe the goings on of the circus which place the reader within the book. There are also quotes – which serve to describe the circus. Indeed the plot of this novel revolves around the circus – though to say it is a book about the night circus seems to miss the point of the story entirely.

This is a book about love. It is a book about magic – and reality. It is also a book about finding yourself. Like a well made cake this book has layers and layers of meaning and the night circus is merely the frosting on top. However it is no means a perfect cake.

Whilst I enjoyed the different perspectives throughout this book – the fact there were so many taking places in different places at different times made it sometimes hard to follow. Then there is the matter of romance  – it is a major element in this book – yet this is not apparent until the very end. I would have loved more scenes – earlier with the besotted couple. Despite this, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus is a modern day masterpiece filled with magic, mystery and romance.

Rating: 4/5 stars.
