Title: Empire of Storms
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy
Some minor spoliers.
Empire of Storms was always going to be a killer novel. How could it be anything less after the standard that Queen of Shadows set?
It begins where its predecessor ends – with Aelin finally returning home to Terrasen. However things go awry very quickly.
The outcome is an epic adventure which spans the continent.
There are pirates. There is magic. There are spirits. Mystical objects. Mystical beasts. There is darkness and there are long journeys. And of course it wouldn’t be a Maas novel without plenty of romance.
In fact almost every character gets paired off in this novel (save Chaol who barely even makes an appearance in this novel). On the romance front this book is at a completely different level to its predecessors. I’m not going to go into detail her – but there were a few scenes which made me feel as if I was reading bad fan-fiction.
Then there were little nuances in the writing which bothered me throughout – such as the repetitive use of the phrase ‘gods-damned’ in almost every single viewpoint.
Whilst these things bothered me greatly – this was still a fun book to read. There are many storylines from the previous novels and novella which intersect in this one – which was really exciting.
However- if you can’t handle cliffhangers – I would suggest you put off reading this book until the next is published. The ending to this book is heart-wrenching.
I’m rating this book 3.5 stars out of 5.
