Review: An Ember in the Ashes

Title: An Ember in the Ashes

Author: Sabaa Tahir

Genre/s: Young Adult/Fantasy

An Ember in the Ashes is an epic tale told through the points of view of two vastly different characters, Elias and Laia. The world in which it is set is a dark and frightening, so if you’re expecting some sort of airy fairy fantasy this probably isn’t the book for you.

Tahir masterfully crafts the story so that there are twists and turns throughout the books and whilst some of the turns are predictable others are simply earth shattering. It’s fair to say, Tahir knows how to create suspense.

The characters in this story are magnificent. Each are distinctly interesting. And almost all of them seem to have a secret.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Tahir’s writing style. Whilst first person narrative-is not my first preference in a novel I think Tahir uses it well.

Whilst all of these things make the book an interesting read there were a few moments which I found to be contradictory and a few small things which weren’t overly believable. However I don’t think this takes away from the story of the book.

If you like suspense, magic and romance then I highly recommend this book.

I’ve rated it 4/5 stars on Goodreads.
